Medical Needs

At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children with medical needs are fully supported so they can access education safely and confidently.

We ASPIRE that through the love of Jesus everyone should “have life and have it to the full”.

We work closely with parents, carers and health professionals to ensure that appropriate care and support are in place for every child.

Supporting Children with Medical Needs

We ensure that:

  • children with medical conditions are properly supported in school
  • individual needs are clearly understood and planned for
  • staff are trained to support specific medical conditions where required
  • children can participate fully in school life, including trips and activities

Where necessary, we create an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) to outline how a child’s medical needs will be managed.

Medication in School

Medication can be administered in school when:

  • it has been prescribed by a doctor
  • written consent has been provided by a parent or carer
  • it is clearly labelled with the child’s name and dosage

All medication is stored safely and administered by trained staff.

Managing Medical Conditions

We support a wide range of medical needs, including:

  • asthma
  • allergies (including severe allergies requiring EpiPen)
  • diabetes
  • other long-term or short-term medical conditions

Staff receive appropriate training to ensure children are supported effectively and safely.

Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs)

For children with more complex medical needs, an Individual Healthcare Plan will be developed in partnership with:

  • parents and carers
  • school staff
  • healthcare professionals

This ensures that everyone understands the child’s needs and how to respond in an emergency.

First Aid
  • Trained first aiders are available at all times during the school day
  • First aid is administered for minor injuries
  • Parents are informed of any significant incidents
Illness and Absence

If your child is unwell:

  • please keep them at home to prevent the spread of illness
  • inform the school office as soon as possible

If a child becomes unwell during the school day, we will contact parents or carers.

Allergies and Dietary Needs

We take allergies and dietary needs seriously.

  • please inform the school of any allergies or dietary requirements
  • care plans will be put in place where needed
  • staff are made aware of children with specific needs
Working with Parents

We value strong communication with families.

Parents and carers should:

  • inform the school of any medical conditions
  • update us of any changes
  • provide required medication and documentation
Supporting Our Families

If you require any support or would like to discuss your child’s medical needs, please contact the school office or speak to the Headteacher.
