At Our Lady’s RC Primary School, our Reception Buddies help our youngest pupils feel safe, welcomed and supported as they begin their school journey.

Each Reception child is paired with a responsible Year 6 buddy who models kindness, leadership and our school values of being Ready, Respectful and Safe.

Supporting a Positive Start

Starting school is an important milestone. Our Reception Buddies help children to:

• Feel secure and confident in their new environment
• Build positive relationships with older pupils
• Learn routines and expectations
• Develop a sense of belonging within our school family

Buddies greet and support Reception pupils, especially during key transition times such as playtimes and special events.

Developing Leadership and Responsibility

For our Year 6 pupils, being a Reception Buddy is a position of trust and responsibility. Through this role, they develop:

• Empathy and compassion
• Patience and understanding
• Leadership and role-modelling skills
• A sense of service within our Catholic community

They understand that their behaviour sets an example for younger pupils.

Building a Strong School Family

The Reception Buddy system strengthens relationships across year groups and promotes a culture of care and inclusion.

It reflects our belief that we are one school family, where older pupils support younger children and everyone plays a part in creating a safe and nurturing environment.
