PSHE & RSE

At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that personal development is an essential part of every child’s education.

We ASPIRE that through the love of Jesus everyone should “have life and have it to the full.”

Through our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum, we help children develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to become healthy, confident, respectful and responsible members of society.

Our curriculum supports children to understand:

  • how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy
  • how to build positive relationships
  • how to stay safe, including online
  • how to manage emotions and wellbeing
  • how to respect differences and diversity
  • how to become responsible citizens
  • how to make informed choices as they grow
  • financial awareness and enterprise skills

Children are also given opportunities to develop financial awareness through practical experiences such as the Year 6 £5 Grow Challenge, where they learn about budgeting, teamwork, enterprise and making responsible financial decisions.

Our Curriculum

Our PSHE curriculum is carefully planned to meet the needs of our pupils and reflects our Catholic values.

We use a range of high-quality resources to support delivery, including:

  • Jigsaw
  • Ten Ten: Life to the Full Plus
  • A Fertile Heart
  • PSHE curriculum themes
  • assemblies and themed events

Topics include:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and Sex Education is taught in accordance with statutory guidance and within the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Children learn about:

  • friendships
  • family relationships
  • respect
  • personal boundaries
  • growing up
  • keeping safe
  • understanding changes as they grow older

Parents are informed when specific aspects of RSE are taught and can view curriculum materials where appropriate.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

We recognise that emotional wellbeing is essential for learning and development.

Children are supported through:

  • positive relationships with trusted adults
  • PSHE lessons
  • pastoral support
  • emotional wellbeing support
  • assemblies
  • opportunities to talk about feelings and wellbeing
Keeping Children Safe

Our curriculum supports pupils in understanding how to stay safe both in school and beyond.

Children learn about:

  • online safety
  • healthy relationships
  • bullying awareness
  • safeguarding
  • making safe choices
  • road safety
  • water safety
  • railway safety
  • personal safety in the community
  • identifying trusted adults and asking for help when needed

These areas help children develop the knowledge and confidence needed to stay safe and make responsible choices.

Children are also given opportunities to develop financial awareness and enterprise skills through practical experiences such as the Year 6 £5 Grow Challenge, where they learn about budgeting, teamwork and making responsible financial decisions.

British Values and SMSC

PSHE and RSE make an important contribution to children’s wider personal development.

Through our curriculum, assemblies, collective worship and wider school experiences, children develop their understanding of:

  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

Children are also supported in their spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development through opportunities to:

  • reflect on their own beliefs and values
  • understand right and wrong
  • build positive relationships
  • celebrate diversity
  • contribute positively to school life and the wider community

This helps children become respectful, responsible and active citizens.
