History

At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that history is an essential part of a broad and enriching curriculum. Through the study of history, children develop an understanding of the past and how it has shaped the world we live in today. History helps pupils develop a strong sense of identity and place within their local community, our nation and the wider world.

Our history curriculum enables children to build a clear understanding of chronology, change and continuity over time. Pupils learn about significant events, people and societies from the past and explore how these have influenced modern life. Through carefully planned learning, children develop a growing understanding of historical periods and how they connect together.

We aim to inspire curiosity and a genuine interest in the past. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, investigate evidence and explore different perspectives. By examining historical sources and artefacts, children learn how historians interpret the past and how evidence can help us understand what life was like in different times.

In our lessons, pupils develop key historical skills, including:

  • understanding chronology and historical timelines

  • asking and investigating historical questions

  • analysing and interpreting evidence

  • recognising similarities and differences between historical periods

  • developing historical vocabulary and communicating their ideas clearly

Through this enquiry-based approach, pupils learn to think critically, weigh evidence and form balanced conclusions about the past.

Our aim is that children leave Our Lady’s with a strong foundation of historical knowledge and the ability to think like historians—curious, reflective and able to understand how the past continues to shape the present and future.
