Art

At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to delivering a rich, vibrant and ambitious Art curriculum for all learners. We aim to inspire creativity, curiosity and confidence, ensuring every child can express themselves and develop a lifelong appreciation of art and design. Through a carefully planned curriculum, children build essential knowledge and skills, with a strong focus on progression and consistency in developing key artistic elements such as colour, texture, form, shape, line, tone and drawing.

From the Early Years through to Key Stage 2, pupils are encouraged to experiment, create and reflect on their work, while exploring a wide range of artists, craft makers and designers. Our curriculum is supported by the Kapow scheme of work, which ensures clear progression and helps children build on prior learning over time. Children are explicitly taught key vocabulary and important artistic concepts to support them in articulating their ideas clearly. They are given regular opportunities to share their work, express their ideas in different ways and engage in discussions, offering feedback to others and reflecting on their own learning.

We foster an environment where children feel confident to take creative risks and develop their own artistic voice. Pupils are encouraged to evaluate their work, think critically and remain open-minded, enabling them to grow as thoughtful, expressive and reflective learners.
