Reception

Welcome to Reception

We are delighted to welcome you to Reception at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School — an exciting and important year where children take their first full steps into school life.

Reception provides a caring and supportive bridge from nursery to Key Stage 1. Our experienced staff create a warm, nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, and confident. Strong relationships help each child settle quickly and begin to thrive both socially and academically.

At Our Lady’s, every child is treated as a unique gift from God. Our approach is child-centred and inclusive, ensuring that every pupil is supported, encouraged, and challenged to reach their full potential. We work closely with families, forming strong partnerships to support each child’s learning and wellbeing.

Learning in Reception

Reception follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, providing opportunities for children to develop across all seven areas of learning. Learning is carefully planned to include a balance of adult-led teaching and purposeful play, both indoors and outdoors.

The curriculum focuses on:

  • Prime areas: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Specific areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design

Children are encouraged to explore, ask questions, practise new skills, and develop confidence, independence, and a love of learning.

Inclusion in Reception

Inclusion is central to our Reception provision. Every child is known, valued, and supported from the very start. Staff carefully observe and assess each child, recognising their strengths, interests, and any additional needs.

Through strong relationships, high expectations, and partnership with families and professionals, we ensure that all children can thrive, feel a sense of belonging, and make excellent progress.

Our Approach to Pastoral Care

Children’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Reception staff help children develop confidence, manage emotions, and build friendships, guided by our Catholic ethos. Opportunities for prayer, reflection, kindness, and respect are woven naturally into the school day.

Reception Life at Our Lady’s

Reception children quickly become part of the wider school community. They take part in assemblies, celebrations, and whole-school activities, helping them to feel a strong sense of belonging and preparing them for Year 1.
